Through songs of hope and inclusion, our LGBT chorus celebrates all of humanity and inspires our community to embrace equality.
… in the power of music to change lives.
… that there is unity in Diversity.
… in affirming the place of LGBT people in society.
… that music builds bridges to bring communities together.
On December 14, 1997, The Gulf Coast Gay Men’s Chorus debuted as guests of the Tampa Bay Gay Men’s Chorus “Gifts of the Season” production at the Players Theater in Sarasota.
In 2005, Harmony: the Women’s Voices of Sarasota, was created as an offshoot of the men’s chorus. The women performed their own musical selections as well as singing with the men on some pieces and the combination of their voices proved so dynamic that in 2008 the two choruses merged to form Diversity: The Voices of Sarasota!
Now entering our 21st Season, Diversity has performed in Sarasota, Miami, Bradenton, Key West, Venice, Fort Myers and Tampa, and has taken part in international GALA Festivals: in San Jose, California; Montreal, Quebec, Canada; Miami, Florida; and Denver, Colorado. The next GALA festival will be in 2020 in Minneapolis!
Diversity performed Sing for the Cure with other GALA choruses at Carnegie Hall in New York City in 2010.
In May 2014, Cris Williamson sang as Diversity’s guest performer at our Spring Concert and in December 2014, Diversity was the guest performer of The Pops of Sarasota and Bradenton during their two “Holiday Spirit of Broadway” concerts.
In addition to the two ticketed concerts each year, Diversity performs at Sarasota and Manatee Pride Festivals and The Gulfcoast Affirming Interfaith Alliance’s World Aids Day each year.
On February 12, 2015, a small group, ENCORE, performed at Equality Florida and Sarasota Film Festival’s A Perfect Wedding event to help celebrate the historic passage of Marriage Equality bill in Florida. The small group is being “reborn” in 2019-2020 under Bruce Ensinger’s leadership.
Diversity: The Voices of Sarasota is a group of gay and gay-friendly men and women who dedicate themselves to sharing their talent with the entire community. They are not just singers, but a family. Our audiences have responded to our distinctive brand of entertainment with genuine enthusiasm and keep coming back again and again. Diversity is currently under the talented leadership and artistic direction of Chris Romeo.
Open, very casual “auditions” may include pitch matching and singing scales and take place in August or September and January. Other, non-singing opportunities to support our mission are also available.
Come hear us! Come join us! Music does change lives!
