Singer Spotlight

Meet Janelle
What is your earliest memory of singing or making music?
According to my parents, I would sing before I could talk. My mom says I would sing to a wall if no one was around to listen. My earliest memory involving singing was at my preschool winter concert. The school had the Jewish children sing a Hanukkah song, and I asked my mom if I could be Jewish for the day so I could sing too. In high school, choir was my main extracurricular activity, and I was fortunate enough to sing in competitions in California, Virginia, South Carolina and throughout Florida.
What first drew you to join Diversity: The Voices of Sarasota?
After high school, I was no longer in a chorus for the first time in my life. For 15 years, the thing that was always a part of me was gone. In 2025, my high school director decided to get alumni together to sing at Carnegie Hall. From that moment, I knew I needed to find a choir and start singing again. I was drawn to Diversity: The Voices of Sarasota because of its mission of inclusion and acceptance. I wanted to be surrounded by like-minded people who sing for the love of singing and to bring joy to the community.
What does singing in Diversity give you that you don’t get anywhere else?
Singing in Diversity gives me a community! Everyone has been so nice, supportive and encouraging.
Is there a song or piece of music that feels especially meaningful to you? Why?
I really love singing "At This Table" and "We Are the World." I think those two pieces have a powerful effect on the audience and the message is so important to hear, especially today.
What might surprise people to learn about you?
I've been to all the Disney parks in Florida, California, France and Japan.
When you’re not singing, how do you like to spend your time?
I love to do Legos, travel, junk journal and spend time with my family.
If you could describe singing in one short phrase, what would it be?
I've always loved the quote, "Where words fail, music speaks."
